Professional Dental Veneers in South Central PA

Dental veneers provide a relatively easy solution to damaged or discolored teeth. Sometimes called dental porcelain laminates, dental veneers are wafer-thin, custom-built shells of natural tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. With a straightforward application intended for aesthetic improvements to the mouth, they can also relieve patients of pain and discomfort associated with damaged teeth.

The dentists at American Dental Care of Harrisburg know the value of a healthy smile in a patient’s life – they make it their duty to improve the look of your smile, increasing your confidence and encouraging you to smile wide. Not only will it feel great, but it will look great too! If you live in Harrisburg, PA, Bressler, PA, New Cumberland, PA, or any of the surrounding areas, our team is the dental veneer provider for you!

Why Choose Dental Veneers

Because there are many different approaches to dental care depending on a patient’s individual experience, it’s important to know whether or not veneers are the best solution for the state of your teeth. Our dentists approve the use of dental veneers to treat the following symptoms and conditions:

  • Discolored teeth – coming from tetracycline stains, root canal treatment, excessive fluoride, or the presence of resin fillings, causing the discoloration in the tooth.
  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (bulges or craters in the tooth)
  • Teeth with gaps between them (veneers can be used to close the space in between these teeth)

The Process

Typically, having dental veneers fitted involves a three appointment process.

1. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

This is a very important step – you will need to explain to the dentist the result you are trying to achieve with your dental veneers. During the appointment, the dentist will examine your teeth to decide whether or not veneers are appropriate for your teeth. The dentist will explain limitations based on his examination of your teeth, at which point he or she may take x-rays, and possibly impressions, of your mouth and teeth.

2. Preparation

A tooth must be prepared properly for a veneer to be effectively fitted and bonded. During this second appointment, the dentist will remove about a half millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface – about the thickness of the veneer to be added to the surface of the tooth.

Before trimming the enamel, you will decide with your dentist whether you need local anesthetic to numb the area. At this point, the dentist will make an impression or model of your tooth. This model is sent out to a dental lab, which will construct your personalized veneer! The building process normally takes 2 to 4 weeks – for particularly unsightly teeth, temporary veneers can be worn until the permanent veneers are ready.

3. Bonding

Before permanent bonding, your personalized dental veneer will be temporarily placed on your tooth to examine its fit and color. The dentist will then repeatedly remove and trim the veneer in order to ensure a proper fit. Additionally, the veneer color can be changed to match the shade of cement to be used. At this point, in order to prepare your teeth to receive the veneer, they will be cleaned, polished, and etched – which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process. A specific tooth-bonding cement is applied and activated with a beam of light, which activates the bonding chemicals in the cement.

The final steps involve the removal of any excess cement and the dentist’s evaluation of your bite. Once the dentist is satisfied with the trim and fit of the tooth, you’re free to go! Your dentist may suggest a follow-up appointment to check how your gums are responding to the presence of a veneer and reexamine the veneer’s placement.
